12 Ways to Love Your Wayward Child

By John Piper. ©2013 Desiring God Foundation.

Website:  http://www.desiringgod.org/

Many parents are broken hearted and completely baffled by their unbelieving son or daughter. They have no clue why the child they raised well is making such awful, destructive decisions.

I have never been one of these parents, but I have been one  of these sons. Reflecting back on that experience, I offer these suggestions to help you reach out to your wayward child.

1. Point them to Christ.

Your rebellious child’s real problem is not drugs or sex or cigarettes or pornography or laziness or crime or cussing or slovenliness or homosexuality or being in a punk rock band.

The real problem is that they don’t see Jesus clearly.

The best thing you can do for them and the only reason to do any of the following suggestions is to show them Christ.

It is not a simple or immediate process, but the sins in their life that distress you and destroy them will only begin to fade away when they see Jesus more like he actually is.

2. Pray for them.

Only God can save your son or daughter, so keep on asking that he will display himself to them in a way they can’t resist worshipping him for.

3. Acknowledge that something is wrong.

If your daughter rejects Jesus, don’t pretend everything is fine. For every unbelieving child, the details will be different. Each one will require parents to reach out in unique ways.

Never acceptable, however, is not reaching out at all. If your child is an unbeliever, don’t ignore it. Holidays might be easier, but eternity won’t be.

4. Don’t expect them to be Christ-like.

If your son is not a Christian, he’s not going to act like one. You know that he has forsaken the faith, so expect him to live by the standards you raised him with.

For example, you might be tempted to say, “I know you’re struggling with believing in Jesus, but can’t you at I am not a superhero least admit that getting wasted every day is sin?”

If he’s struggling to believe in Jesus, then there is very little significance in admitting that drunkenness is wrong. You want to protect him, yes. But his unbelief is the most dangerous problem not partying.

No matter how your child’s unbelief exemplifies itself in his behaviour, always be sure to focus more on the heart’s sickness than its symptoms.

5. Welcome them home.

Because the deepest concern is not your child’s actions, but his heart, don’t create too many requirements for coming home. If he has any inkling to be with you, it is God giving you a chance to love him back to Jesus.

Obviously there are some instances in which parents must give ultimatums: “Don’t come to this house if you are...” But these will be rare.

Don’t lessen the likelihood of an opportunity to be with your child by too many rules.

If your daughter smells like weed or an ashtray, spray her jacket with Febreze and change the sheets when she leaves, but let her come home.

If you find out she’s pregnant, then buy her folic acid, take her to her twenty- week ultrasound, protect her from Planned Parenthood, and by all means let her come home.

If your son is broke because he spent all the money you lent him on loose women and ritzy liquor, then forgive his debt as you’ve been forgiven, don’t give him any more money, and let him come home.

If he hasn’t been around for a week and a half because he’s been staying at his girlfriend’s or boyfriend’s apartment, plead with him not to go back, and let him come home.

6. Plead with them more than you rebuke them.

Be gentle in your disappointment.

Plead without condemn you children ...

What really concerns you is that your child is destroying herself, not that she’s breaking rules. Treat her in a way that makes this clear. She probably knows especially if she was raised as a Christia that what she’s doing is wrong. And she definitely knows you think it is.

So she doesn't need this pointed out. She needs to see how you are going to react to her evil. Your gentle forbearance and sorrowful hope will show her that you really do trust Jesus. Her conscience can condemn her by itself.

Parents ought to stand kindly and firmly, always living in the hope that they want their child to return to.

7. Connect them to believers who have better access to them.

There are two kinds of access that you may not have to your child: geographical and relational. If your wayward son lives far away, try to find a solid believer in his area and ask him to contact your son.

This may seem nosy or stupid or embarrassing to him, but it’s worth it especially if the believer you find can also relate to your son emotionally in a way you can’t.

Relational distance will also be a side effect of your child leaving the faith, so your relationship will be tenuous  and should be protected if at all possible. But hard rebuke is still necessary.

This is where another believer who has emotional access to your son may be very helpful.

If there is a believer who your son trusts and perhaps even enjoys being around, then that believer has a platform to tell your son in a way he may actually pay attention to that he’s being an idiot.

This may sound harsh, but it’s a news flash we all need from time to time, and people we trust are usually the only ones who can package a painful rebuke so that it is a gift to us.

A lot of rebellious kids would do well to hear that they’re being fool and it is rare that this can helpfully be pointed out by their parents, so try to keep other Christians in your kids lives.

8. Respect their friends.

Honour your wayward child in the same way you’d honor any other unbeliever.

They may run with crowds you’d never consider talking to or even looking at, but they are your child’s friends. Respect that even if the relationship is founded on sin.

They’re bad for your son, yes. But he’s bad for them, too. Nothing will be solved by making it perfectly evident that you don’t like who he’s hanging around with.

When your son shows up for a family birthday celebration with another girlfriend one you’ve never seen before and probably won’t see again—be hospitable. She’s also someone’s wayward child, and she needs Jesus, too.

9. Email them.

Praise God for technology that lets you stay in your kids’ lives so easily! When you read something in the Bible that encourages you and helps you love Jesus more, write it up in a couple lines and send it to your child.

The best exhortation for them is positive examples of Christ’s joy in your own life. Don’t stress out when you’re composing these as if each one needs to be singularly powerful.

Just whip them out one after another, and let the cumulative effect of your satisfaction in God gather up in your child’s inbox.

God’s word is never proclaimed in vain.

10. Take them to lunch.

If possible, don’t let your only interaction with your child be electronic.

Get together with him face to face if you can.

You may think this is stressful and uncomfortable, but trust me that it’s far worse to be in the child’s  shoes, he is experiencing all the same discomfort, but compounded by guilt.

So if he is willing to get together with you for lunch, praise God, and use the opportunity.

It will feel almost hypocritical to talk about his daily life, since what you really care about is his eternal life, but try to anyway.

He needs to know you care about all of him.

Then, before lunch is over, pray that the Lord will give you the gumption to ask about his soul. You don’t know how he’ll respond.

Will he roll his eyes like you’re an idiot? Will he get mad and leave? Or has God been working in him since you talked last?

You don’t know until you risk asking. (Here’s a note to parents of younger children: Set up regular times to go out to eat with your kids.)

Not only will this be valuable for its own sake, but also, if they ever enter a season of rebellion, the tradition of meeting with them will already be in place and it won’t feel weird to ask them out to lunch.

If a son has been eating out on Saturdays with his dad since he was a tot, it will be much harder for him later in life to say no to his father’s invitation, even as a surly nineteen-year-old.

11. Take an interest in their pursuits.

Odds are that if your daughter is purposefully rejecting Christ, then the way she spends her time will probably disappoint you.

Nevertheless, find the value in her interests, if possible, and encourage her.

You went to her school plays and soccer games when she was ten; what can you do now that she’s twenty to show that you still really care about her interests?

Jesus spent time with tax collectors and prostitutes, and he wasn’t even related to them.

Imitate Christ by being the kind of parent who will put some earplugs in your pocket and head down town to that dank little nightclub where your daughter’s CD release show is.

Encourage her and never stop praying that she will begin to use her gifts for Jesus’ glory instead her own.

12. Point them to Christ.

This can’t be over-stressed. It is the whole point. No strategy for reaching your son or daughter will have any lasting effect if the underlying goal isn't to help them know Jesus.

Point them to Christ.

It’s not so that they will be good kids again; it’s not so that they’ll get their hair cut and start taking showers; it’s not so that they’ll like classical music instead of death core

It is not so that you can stop being embarrassed at your weekly Bible study; it’s not so that they’ll vote conservative again by the next election; it’s not even so that you can sleep at night, knowing they’re not going to hell.

The only ultimate reason to pray for them, welcome them, plead with them, email them, eat with them, or take an interest in their interests is so that their eyes will be opened to Christ.

And not only is he the only point, he is the only hope. When they see the wonder of Jesus, satisfaction will be redefined.

He will replace the pathetic vanity of the money, or the praise of man, or the high, or the orgasm that they are staking their eternities on right now.

Only his grace can draw them from their perilous pursuits and bind them safely to himself captive, but satisfied.

He will do this for many. Be faithful and don’t give up.

John Hawley Interviewd Richard Dawkins

        An Interview with the
        Archbishop of Atheism
              By John Hawley

John Hawley is an evangelist working with the Open Air Mission. On the 28th June this year (2012) during one of his outdoor meetings in Oxford, he met Richard Dawkins, who happened to be passing by.

We have known John and his wife Sue for over 20 years and in fact they visited us a couple of times in Vila Real, Portugal, where we were involved in missionary work.

Viriato and Janet

"An Interview with the Archbishop of Atheism" by John Hawley.

It was a hot sunny day in the end of June as I preached in our usual patch in Cornmarket in the heart of Oxford.

Tourists, students and shoppers all around us, particularly many Sixth Form hopefuls on an Oxford University Taster Day.

John and Richard Dawkins

As I was preaching I said that the moment Richard Dawkins died he would no longer be an atheist, but would bow the knee in awful recognition to King Jesus.

Half an hour later [an OAM colleague] nudged me and said:

"that is Richard Dawkins who has just passed our meeting, pushing his bike".

I hurried after him and started by asking him if he had any assurance of what would happen to him when he died.

He suffered me for a while asking me who I was etc. I shared my testimony that as a lad of fifteen I had come to know Christ as my Saviour. At this he became dismissive, and to be honest just plain rude.

He asserted that no one could go along with all this and that my brain anyway ‘was only a lump of meat!’ I quoted from the Bible that one day he would have to face God and it was ‘appointed to men once to die and after that the judgement.’

His derision and contempt was now unconcealed and he started walking away pouring out a verbal assault. I continued to share some Bible truths with him and he came back for some more.

After a few more challenges he became incensed with contempt and anger, and just walked away in disgust! It was ironic that only a few minutes before a busker had been playing ‘There is a green Hill far away’ right in the spot where I chatted with Richard Dawkins.

At least he accepted a Sure of Heaven CD in the early part of the conversation, which he put in his cycle basket.

Into that same basket one of our number had put a Unique Jesus some years before after he saw him going into the Clarenden Centre. Richard Dawkins has been offered the gospel but has arrogantly and stubbornly rejected it.

My thoughts go back to Pilgrim’s Progress where another ‘Professor’ declared at the Interpreter’s House - ‘I have so hardened my heart against the grace of God that I cannot repent’.

How we need to pray for people such as Professor Dawkins!

"180" movie

It's ok to kill a baby in the womb, when?

A dramatic film that documents the responses of young adults to questions about abortion by evangelist Ray Comfort, which also includes discussions on Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust in Europe, appears to be gathering enough momentum to go viral after being released online a week ago.

Prior to the video’s online release, Comfort told The Christian Post that, in the process of making the film, he asked a question that was “so powerful that it not only changed the people’s minds about abortion, and made them do a 180 (degree turn in viewpoint), but it made them do a 180 when it comes to their own eternal salvation.”

If you want to know more, please click on the site below and watch “180” movie. It has been seen by more than a half million people since was released online two weeks ago.

Strange Factor

In my post, the ‘Strange Omission’, I said that “prayerlessness is the Church’s major malady”.

Today, I want to speak about another weakness of the Church - the ‘Strange Factor’, which is the hidden message of the Acts of the Apostles.

Christians often think that the Acts of the Apostles records the first Christians' obedience to the Great Commission. But, is that right?

It might sound ‘strange’, but in the book of Acts (although we don’t see it straightaway because it is hidden) Christians were very reluctant to venture beyond the borders of Judaism. A closer look shows that if there had not been a “great persecution” in Jerusalem, Christians would probably have stayed in the capital indefinitely (Acts 8:1).

So, the ‘Strange Factor’ in the book of Acts of the Apostles (the hidden message), is 'reluctance'.

In Romans 16:25-26 Paul speaks about a mystery, going on to reveal that this mystery, which had been kept secret since the world began, is the gospel, the salvation that should be preached to all nations. This was at the heart of his calling, just as God had told Ananias about Saul's calling:

Acts 9:15: “This man is my chosen instrument, to carry my name before the gentiles”

But, was it at the heart of the Jewish Christians, also called Hebrew Christians?

The book of Acts shows how reluctant the Jews were to preach the gospel to the gentiles.

Even the leading apostle, Peter, was very reluctant to associate with gentiles, hence the reason that God gave a vision and said:

“Get up Peter. Kill and eat. Peter replied, I have never eaten anything impure. Then, when Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius, the Gentile, stopped at the gate.” Acts 10: 12-17

Peter needed that vision to go to Cornelius’ house and preach the gospel we find recorded in Acts. 10:34-43.

But, it was not just the first Christians who showed reluctance. The Church of Christ throughout its history on earth has always shown reluctance in obeying the Great Commission.

“Sit down, young man! When God pleases to convert the heathen, He’ll do it without you or me!” said John C. Ryland, a senior Baptist minister in the 1780’s to the young man before him - William Carey.

Do you know what the cause of offense was?

William Carey had suggested that the Great Commission, the mandate of Christ to go to the ends of the earth, was binding not just in the Acts of the Apostles, but also upon every succeeding generation of Christians.

Are we reluctant to go and preach to our neighbors, colleagues, relatives, people in our streets or in the next village/town, not forgetting those who live away in another Country or Continent?

Have you spoken to anybody this week about Christ?

Have you ever considered leaving your 'comfort zone' to go to another Country and do something for Christ, even if it is just for 'short term'? Or do you just go abroad for holiday?

We need prayer, good meetings and solid teaching in our Churches, but our primordial task is to go and preach the Gospel to the lost and we must be involved in it.

Jerusalem (evangelism 1)

Judea and Samaria (evangelism 2)

The end of the earth (evangelism 3).

In the three parables in Matthew 21:28-22:14, Jesus teaches about God taking His kingdom from one people and giving it to another people.

In the second parable “The Parable of the Talents” – Jesus said:

“Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits”.

Are we producing fruits, or have we fallen in the same apathy that we see in West Countries, where Churches are developing social and anthropological areas (that's good), but are ignoring the Great Commission?

Many Churches are saying, “Come, we have the best meetings in our community", instead of saying “Go and preach the gospel to all creation!"

Our disobedience will not stop God fulfilling His eternal purpose, but we will miss out and God will give the task to other people!

If we won’t miss out, why would I be bothered to write this post?

Sorry, Andrew, you are to remain blind...

Andrew Díaz Russel

2001 and 2002 were a nightmare for me. I had to put up with operations and the information which I was given by my consultant:

“Sorry Andrew, you are to remain blind for the rest of your days...".

I was converted at the age of 4 but had not been as good a person as I should have been so I thought the Lord was punishing me for all I had done in the past. I was feeling very low and hoped to expire soon, perhaps during one of the operations I was awaiting.

The very year I went blind, I had set myself the goal of reading the Bible in one year but I never thought that I wouldn’t be able to finish it in time. I managed to read up to John 8 on the 31st of August. When I woke up from the coma, Dad decided to read the rest of the Bible to me since I couldn’t do it for myself. He found where the first blank space was in my little calendar and commenced reading.

It was John 9:1-3 I listened between tear and tear to the verses:

“His disciples asked Him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Andrew and Uska

I felt much better having listened to those verses in John 9:1-3 though the problems were still there. But, although I still have my low moments, I feel an inner peace I cannot put in plain when

I remember Isaiah 41:10:

“So, do not fear for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand".

Now, I do not mind being blind physically because I know that I am not blind spiritually!

My Lord turns my darkness into light.

I know that I will see again, if it is not during my time here, in heaven. And the most important thing I have learned through my blindness is this:

1 Samuel 16:7 says:

For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart”.

God will not judge us according to our pretty outside. He knows everything including our thought life, the things that are unseen and which embarrass us.

Those hidden sins, that shameful deed you can’t shake from your conscience… And yet, God loves us so much there is nothing we may have done or thought that is greater than His love for us.

Even though the spotless, perfect, holy God will judge with justice and righteousness, He came to earth so that in Jesus, He would go through our hell on the cross so that we would not have to face that prospect ourselves.

a.diazrussell@gmail.com

He loves you so much He took your place to forgive everything, even the things we don’t wish anybody to see. If you are honest with yourself, you know the things nobody else other than God and you know. Those things already make you a sinner in front of God. Acknowledging it is just being honest with yourself and God.

And yet, do you want to do something about it? Being honest only makes you remain in your current condition but do you follow Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?

Thanks for reading my testimony

Andrew Díaz Russel.

Conclusion by Viriato:

Andrew is attending our Church since 2012. He has a good testimony and he uses all the opportunities to witness to

people about Jesus.

If you want, you can contact him by the email above.

1996 Andrew in red before
he was blind.

On the photo: Below, my son Ricardo is first and my son Pedro is third.

Please, feel free to send his testimony to your friends and contacts.

About Andrew's question at the end of his testimony: "do you want to do something about it?"

If you do, I can tell you that you can’t earn eternal life. It is God’s gift to all who humble themselves and come to Jesus. “Turn to God in repentance and have faith in the Lord Jesus Act 20:21.

And He will forgive your sins and give you a new heart.

But, how can I come to Jesus?

Would you like to pray … and tell God that you understand now that you broke God’s law and you can’t earn eternal life, but you repent from all your sins and put your faith only in Jesus?

Yes I want to pray right now.

... I am not blind spiritually...

Heavenly Father

Have mercy on me, a sinner. I believe in you and that your word is true.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that he died on the cross so that I may now have forgiveness for my sins and eternal life.

I know that without you in my heart my life is meaningless.

I believe in my heart that you, Lord God, raised Him from the d.

Please Jesus forgive me, for every sin I have ever committed or done in my heart, please Lord Jesus forgive me and come into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior today. I need you to be my Savior and my Father.

I would like so much to say like Andrew "Now, I know that I am not blind spiritually".

I give you my life and ask you to take full control from this moment on; I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ."

Amen.

If you did this pray, please before you go to bed tonight read in your Bible about "What shall I do to be saved? In Acts 2:37-38, 16:30-31.

Just to let you know that Andrew and Cristina have married in our Church
