Our son André (23) who has finished his course at Moorlands College based in South east England is now living in Australia.

He is engaged with Sara (21) a missionary daughter. He met Sara when he went to Philippines in 2013 for his final year block placement. 

He has chosen to do an overseas mission trip to the Philippines among the Banwaon people, which is a tribal people group found somewhere in the Island of Mindanao in the South Philippines.

André spent 4 weeks living amongst this tribe, plus 3 days each way for travel and stayed with Sara's parents.

Sara's parents have been missionaries among Banwaon people for the last 16 years.

André and Sara got married this year (September 2015) in Australia and they would like to be involved in missionary work.

I. Introduction:  

Ready to slaughter some sacred cows?

Soulish believers

For some time now, I've been observing how many of today’s “Christians” have willingly swallowed the deception that is rampant in today’s world.

And, for the most part, the church has been the first to belly up to the trough. There are exceptions, of course, but they’re getting harder and harder to find.

I'm going to admit that this particular subject is one that I've really been avoiding and just didn't want to address. Things just finally got to the point where I couldn't avoid it any longer.

The only way I can describe it is to call it a “restless and troubled” nagging in my spirit.

This particular post will be the first in a series dealing with deception in the lives of today’s believers, deception in the church and the disobedience of the church.

So, without further ado, let’s start killing off a few sacred cows.

A. A Little Background

I recently re-read Derek Prince’s teaching sheet titled “Spiritual or Soulish,” and that’s when things finally started to come together. In this installment, I’ll be borrowing from his most excellent treatment of this subject so that we can have some common understanding.

In the original pattern of creation, there was a descending relationship. God moved upon man’s spirit; his spirit moved upon his soul; and his soul directed his body. 

The spirit of man comes directly from God and relates directly to God.

Through man’s rebellion, however, his spirit was set aside and his soul took over control. As a result, unregenerate man is controlled by the three functions of his soul: the will, the intellect and the emotions.

When God reconciles man to Himself, His purpose is to restore the original order, by which He once again relates directly to man’s spirit; man’s spirit in turn moves upon his soul; and man’s soul moves upon his body.

This explains the words of David in 

Psalm 103:1

Bless the Lord, O my soul. 

Through faith, David’s spirit had been reunited with God and was eager to worship Him. 

So his spirit stirred up his soul to move upon his vocal organs to utter the appropriate words of worship.

So long as man remains in submission to God and his soul remains in submission to his spirit, man functions in harmony with God and with himself. 

But whenever man reasserts his rebellion against God, his soul is no longer in submission to his spirit and the harmony is broken.

The Greek of the New Testament has a special adjective, formed directly from the word for soul, psuche, which describes action initiated by the soul. The adjective is psuchikos. 

In English, the natural way to render this would be soulish. Unforunately, there is no English for such a word.

As a result, different English translation of the New Testament have used a variety of different words and phrases to describe this word: natural, sensual, worldly, no-spiritual, worldly-minded, without the spirit, and “to follow their natural instinct.” 

All of these translate into one and the same Greek word.

For our purposes, we’ll use the word soulish.

B. So What Does All This Mean to Us?

For understanding spiritual things, the soul is dependent upon the spirit. If it is out of harmonywith the spirit, the realm of spiritual truth is closed to it. 

In order for the truth to be revealed to us, it is important that we approach spiritual things with the correct attitude – our soul submitted to our spirit and our spirit submitted to and in union with God.

Whenever the soul of a Christian is not submitted through his spirit to God, he becomes a channel through which every kind of carnality (earthly, sensual, worldly, and unspiritual) and division can infiltrate his life and infiltrate the church.

I I. Conclusion:

A Serious Warning 

In James 3:15, the apostle speaks about a form of wisdom which does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual (soulish), demonic.

James has given us a clear depiction of a downward slide in three successive stages:

from the earthly to the soulish to the demonic.

A. In The First Stage Christians become Earthly

In the first stage, Christians become earthly and lose the true vision of eternity. Unable to see beyond the things of this life (success, pleasure, wealth, health), they are only interested in what their faith can do for them in this life.

Paul has a message for such people. 

1 Corinthians 15:19: If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

Christians that are like that often consider themselves prosperous and successful – God considers them pitiable.

B. From Earthly , The Next Stage Is Soulish

From earthly, the next stage is soulish. To be soulish is to be ego-centric, self-centered. 

For such people, the Christian faith is a way to get what they want out of life. They suppose that godliness is a means of gain (1 Timothy 6:5).

The soulish opens the way for the demonic. This is one of the main ways in which demons infiltrate the church and man.

A really common question I hear asked a lot is: 

Do Christians ever need deliverance from demons?

James has given us a clear answer to that one.

This downward progression from the earthly to the soulish to the demonic exposes both the individual believer and whole congregations to the activities of demons.

In many instances today, the church is an ungodly mixture. No clear line is drawn between the spiritual and the soulish. 

As a result, there is no barrier whatsoever to the demonic.

Genuine manifestations of the Holy Spirit are interlaced with manifestations that are clearly demonic.

Lies, half-truths and outright deception are interwoven and wrapped up and packaged in messages and entertainment that are supposedly presented in the name of Jesus Christ.

All too often, we just swallow these half-truthful exercises in claptrap by the (earthly, soulish)  justification that we “got some good” from the message

We conveniently forget (or, perhaps, we choose to forget) Jesus’ admonition that a little leaven corrupts the whole lump.

If we were to practice some real discernment, we would realize that we are placing ourselves in danger of participation in the fulfilling of one of the most terrible warnings in scripture:

2 Thessalonians 2:11-12:

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie, so that all those who do not believe the truth, but delight in unrighteousness, might be condemned.

Now I don’t know about you, but I believe that’s a pretty scary scripture.

Should God choose to send strong delusion, you’d best believe that it’s going to happen.

In the next instalment – a few of today’s sacred cows that need the same treatment Elijah gave to the false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (1 Kings, Chapter 18).

Some of you may not be too pleased.

I I. Why Is Porno wrong?

1 Cor. 6:18, 

"Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body."

Even though the Bible does not say anything about pornography, it is still wrong.  Pornography deals with photography and/or illicit paintings and/or cartoons that are designed to arouse sexual passions in the viewer.  It is certainly possible that at the time when the Bible was written that there were various art forms that depicted sexually explicit things. 

But apparently this phenomenon was not sufficiently prevalent enough for the subject to be addressed in the Bible. Nevertheless, we can derive an accurate conclusion from scriptures that deal with other issues and apply them to the issue of pornography.

Matt. 5:27-28, 

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery'; 28 but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."

Col. 3:5, 

"Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry."

As you can see, the Bible tells us to be sexually pure. This is why Jesus even tells us to guard our minds. 

Note that He said in Matt. 5:28 that to even look on a woman lustfully is to commit adultery with her. In viewing pornography, nakedness, and explicit sexual displays lust is not only given the opportunity to rise (thereby enticing since) but most often lustful passions and thoughts are triggered in the heart and mind.

This is obviously sinful and clearly demonstrates that pornography is sinful.  Add to this that often times pornography involves viewing sexual intercourse between unmarried people, and/or homosexual and lesbian activities, and we have a very clear case of it being sinful.

Even if the pornography does not involve viewing sexual intercourse between two people, it involves the viewing of naked individuals which is properly reserved for a husband and a wife.

Now someone may ask "What about art?  It often portrays the nakedness of men and women? Why isn't that pornographic?" 

The difference between art and pornography is the difference between beauty and lust.  In art the nakedness is intended to be a display of  beauty and wonder.  

Pornography does no such thing. It's intent is to entice a person by arousing the person's lust.  But then, someone may say that they view pornography as an art form and that it is beautiful.  But this is nothing more than an attempt to justify sin.

I I I.  A wife whose husband views pornography have grounds to divorce?

People have different views about Matthew 5:27-28, I have my views as well, but let see what Jeff Olson respond to this question:

Only God understands the pain that many women feel when they discover that their husbands are looking at pornography. 

Many wives are hurt by this discovery. They become angry and filled with personal doubts.

Women in this situation often find themselves on a difficult road, especially if there has been a pattern and history to their husband’s involvement. 

Betrayal of the marital trust cuts deep into a woman’s soul, and many have found that it takes time to learn to trust again.

Some have had husbands who slowly re-earned trust by doing whatever it takes to bring an end to the practice, by not blaming their wives for their own wrongs, and by patiently accepting responsibility for the emotional pain and struggles with trust they have created for their wives.

It’s never easy for a wife to walk this road. While some are committed to stay married and work through the pain and mistrust, others take a different course by appealing to the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:27-28 , citing them as grounds to seek a divorce. “You have heard that it was said, ‘

Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Their contention is understandable. Since their husbands sexually lusted over women while looking at pornography, then they are guilty of the sin of adultery. 

And because adultery is grounds for divorce ( Matthew 19:9 ), they believe they have grounds to seek a divorce.

They may have a case — depending on the severity and extent of their husband’s problem. 

A husband who is into severe forms of pornography such as paedophilia or sadomasochism has likely sunken into such a deep level of perversion that it causes just as much devastation as physical adultery. 

Of course, a husband who refuses to give up his affair with any form of pornography is blatantly betraying his covenant with his wife. 

Generally speaking, it is only a matter of time before he seeks to act out on the lust he’s been cultivating in his heart through pornography. In such cases, a wife has a basis to appeal to the words of Jesus as grounds for divorce too.

Realistically, however, if Jesus meant to imply that sexually lustful thoughts were grounds for divorce in every case, then every husband could be divorced on that basis. 

What husband can say that his mind has never wandered into sexual lust of some kind. 

As we try to understand the implications of Jesus’ words, we must remember the context in which Jesus spoke about sexual lust and adultery. 

Jesus’ main point was not to give a wife wholesale grounds for divorce. He made the link between lust and adultery primarily to make the point that sin is more than mere behaviour  it is also a matter of the heart.

I V. 10 Steps to Overcoming Pornography Addiction

1. First, you must acknowledge the addiction exists. 

Many who are caught in the trap of addiction will adamantly deny the problem. 

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. - Proverbs 28:13

2. You must recognize that what you are doing is wrong.

Addicts find a way to justify their problem in their mind. 

I John 2:16

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 

3. You must not blame others.

"If my wife/husband were just more affectionate." 

"If women/men were not so seductive."

Adam blamed Eve and she blamed the serpent. Instead, you must begin to take responsibility for your actions.

4. Make yourself accountable to a spiritual authority,

Perhaps parents, or a pastor or mature believer. Everybody needs a "safe" person to share their struggles with. 

James 5:16

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.  

5. You must recognize that "will power" is not the answer.

you are in need of God's help

At a weak moment, your "will" may fail you. By admitting that you are in need of God's help, you open access to His supernatural intervention in your life. You must yield your will to God's will. That's when He can begin a new work in your life.

6. Study the Word of God concerning sexual purity. 

Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the Word implanted, which is able to save your souls. - James 1:21  

7. You must destroy any pornography in your possession. 

You can't wean yourself off pornography. Think of the hidden pornography in your home as a ticking time bomb that will ultimately destroy your family.

8. You must learn to flee temptation. 

Self-deception may enter when you think you can play with fire without getting burned. 

Proverbs 4:14,15

Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not proceed in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not pass by it. Turn away from it and pass on. 

9. Give yourself time to work through the process of recovery. 

More often than not, God chooses to take us through a learning and growing process, that can be very painful. Victory over addiction should be viewed as a marathon, not a sprint.

10. It's cliche, but you must approach your addiction one day at a time. 

Look for little victories and rejoice in the progress you're making.

I V. What shall I do to be saved? 

If you recognize that you are a sinner and you would like to ask the Lord forgiveness for your sins, give your life to Jesus and receive Eternal Life, you can do the following prayer:

... forgive me Lord ...

"Heavenly Father, I want to ask you forgiveness for all my sins and I want to put my trust in Jesus today. Please, have mercy on me, a sinner. I believe in you and that your word is true. 

I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that he died on the cross so that I may now have forgiveness for my sins and eternal life. I know that without you in my heart my life is meaningless.

I believe in my heart that you, Lord God, raised Him from the dead. Please Jesus forgive me, for every sin I have ever committed or done in my heart, please Lord Jesus forgive me and come into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior today. I need  you to be my Savior and my Father.

I give you my life and ask you to take full control from this moment on; I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ."
